Since arriving in Boston in Fall 2016 to attend Berklee College of Music, Devina Boughton has emergedas a dynamic and passionate trumpet player, vocalist, educator, composer, and conductor. Devina is in their second year attending Berklee and is dual majoring in Trumpet Performance and Composition and minoring in Contemporary Conducting. Embracing everything from the traditional to the eclectic, Devina is driven to be a knowledgeable, passionate and versatile musician.
Hailing from rainy Portland, OR, Devina’s first musical training was in singing, as a member of the rigorous Pacific Youth Choir from ages 8 to 18. Devina began playing the trumpet in the fifth grade inspired by their uncle Mark Berney’s career as a trumpet player, and joined outside of school jazz groups to learn as much as possible when there was no band program in their middle school. In high school, Devina volunteered as an assistant director of multiple band programs, leading football games and performances with the concert band, choir, and jazz ensemble, and helped many students advance their musical skills. Now at Berklee, they are a Core Music Tutor, and Assistant Music Director and cofounder of the Underground Choir at Berklee.
Devina has a passion for sharing what they have learned with others. Through teaching and performing alike, they strive to convey emotion and intelligence through music as an avenue that we can all connect with, no matter what background.
